The Laure & Gilou Love Saga:
(will they/won’t they/do they?)
At one point whilst watching this wek’s Spiral i thought:
” Gilou Is in love with her!”
First Gilou (the incredible hulk?!) sulks when he overhears Laure phoning Bremont at the station.
Then he sulks again in his car whilst following her, fade to blue and sad music plays in the background, in the rain..
He follows Laure to an apartment block and whilst waiting outside he
phones Nadia asking her to check the number plate of a car parked outside. Nadia tells him:
“It’s The Crime Squad”
We know that he guesses that it’s Belmont’s car.
Another time Tin Tin & Gilou are parked up, talking about Gilou’s promotion and Tin Tin turns to him and says:
“Don’t tell me it won’t be a wrench, leaving Laure?”
Gilou look away, sighs, hunches up a little..
Gilou follows her again when Laure goes to meet Belmont, all excited like a teenager. Belmont comes out to her car parked up outside.
Laure looks up to Belmont, face beaming and says:
“Where are you taking me?
” Nowhere, this is the end of the road, what are you not telling me?,
i have the dealer and the bullet”..
Heartbreakingly, Laure does not get it for a while and persists, still thinking they are an item, until finally being frozen out by his arctic glare..Ah.
During this time Gilou is still parked outside, watching. It does seem a little stalkersish. He has followed her since she received a mysterious phone call back at the Station. Just hearing her end of it:
Then we see both Laure and Gilou driving seperately, him following her. Blue ghostly light appears( favoured by Spiral for moody moments) more wonderful music plays..It was at this point that i felt Gilou is definitely jealous. They drive, drive, for some time.
This whole thread is car themed!
This leads us to the point later where Bremon breaks up with her and Gilou is watching, solicitiously, from a distance away as Laure breaks down and cries in her car.
Gilou watching her exclaims angrily:
He’s worried she’s been hurt, again? i’m guessing. All in all i felt he was looking to catch her if she fell.Ah.
Funnily, he said it in English, this being balanced out later by somebody else in that evening saying “merde!”

Josephine gets money out of a safe
Roban puts ? something into a safe, i thought the letter however that was left out as Aranaud found it.
Possibly the Casino man gets money out of a safe to give to Josephine, since he takes her inside?
Mrs. Coucelles gives up the location of her husband’s safe.

How odd & surreal was that scene where Laure and Gilou
( i think) go looking for a tip.
They end up at a place staffed by a guy with huge big eyes with enormous shadows who looks a little like he has clown make-up on.
He answers their query by replying:
“Comme s’appelle Mr Bo”!
Was this a complete red herring a “poussin rouge”?
nb. The background music, which i suddenly noticed again last week, is really growing on me..

i reckon the Station Policeman didn’t ask him for I.D, not that we saw. Maybe Le Shark was so good he carried it off(well the Station guy would presume his knowledge about the girl to mean that he Was the Police). Or as you say, is a real Policeman, too truly terrible, Non?
Isn’t there like a Trafficking or Vice Department that Laure & Co would have liaised with by now? Wonder when they will twig if ever, about Elena’s brief sojourn at and disappearance from, the station?

i suppose there is something of a lizard about Gilou, being that he has a big face and a proportionally large-ish chin i guess but what is a Monitor Lizard when it’s at home?!
He’s still a big hunkathon though. For me he has an endearing drag aspect to him, think Hinge & Bracket..He could well have a handbag which he would conjure out of nowhere, it would be a big old-fashioned and capacious one, opening with a clasp and from within it’s depths he would flourish a hankerchief for Laure to blow her ever snivelling nose on..
Nb. What does your mate think of my theory that Gilou blow dries his hair? A bit unusual for a French Les Flic..or maybe the wardrobe department, exasperated by his refusal to change his jeans or T-Shirt (“i’ve only worn them a few weeks!”) took their revenge by bundling him over, protesting loudly, to the Hair Stylists!…

You would expect as these sort of Dramas usually go, that Vlad would be of the same Nationality and they are all linked ‘from way back when/or from the home country/same village etc.’ ‘ but with Spiral we can never assume..
Very interesting idea that Vlad could be Mr Big at the prison, it’s surely a possibility?
It would certainly be to their benefit to have someone either within the Legal system. Literally within it as in prison would still be useful. or within the Police.
@Igloo’ for Gilou very funny..i agree about T-Shirts and jeans, however there is a strange law of physics that says some guys are made for suits and look terrible in T-shirts (especially if they iron them including the sleeves-quelle horreure) and some guys just were created for jeans and old T-shirts..Gilou being a prime example..
I like a guy in a suit or a T-shirt, specially Soul Suit style, now Belmont certainly carries off a suit, ne c’est pas? I feel i am being too terribly sexist dewelling on all this, i may receive a Guardian administered shock emanating from the keyboard soon whilst offending all or some of the men here..

Yes, i too, hoped for Laure to find love with Belmont preferably, no bad thing that they argue as all watchers of romantic dramas can attest. This is often the marker for ‘true love’..First they hate each other, argue, stomp off.. Then there is the required numerous misunderstandings and then, hopefully, reconciliation.
@James Donaghy predicted on here for us romantics, that they “may well get back together when this case is closed” so there is hope for a fairy tale happy ending yet…perhaps

Tani (who i believe is plotting to kill Niko and ‘take over’ as described to her mate by one of the girls)
strenuously denies this to Niko.
So Le shark is the big bumbling and evil fake? Policeman who collects Mila from the station. So i must correct an earlier statement i made saying the Mayor could be Le Shark (could the Mayor be Vlad?)
This conversation doesn’t really make sense other than Niko must have been accusing Tani of telling Vlad, not Le Shark, since surely Le Shark was at one point asked to help by Niko?
Whichever, if Tani is telling the truth to Niko, then who did call Vlad?
If there is a leak from Niko’s camp to Vlad then, who would be likely to have Vlad’s Number? We know that Head horrible girl Mila has Niko’s number however it seems unlikely any of them would have Vlad’s.
Therefore there must be a leak in the Police leading to Vlad and or Le Shark? Or perhaps the mysterious Vlad just saw the News..
One point, is Le Shark a real Policeman? If not, how on earth did he gain entry to the Station and custody of the young girl? Surely he would have to have shown I.D? Also, how did Le Shark know exactly which Police Station to turn up at? Since her escape was not publicised.

Nb. in my light hearted description of Belmont as a giant grown up “slimmed down” Gnome i want to clarify i am in no way either describing either Gnomes and or Belmont as either fat or ugly…Belmont being rather more than gorgeous..
Upon reflection Gnomes are just a bit padded out with those all weather clothes and on deeper consideration all look like Father Christmas, how deep is that? Would i say no to a Gnome if the unlikely occurrence arose? probably, on account of the disparity in size and way too much beard..However Belmont..

You realise that his partner is going to kill Niko
i’m finding Spiral to be wicked, wild and wonderful to watch. As a thing of beauty when it morphs into incredible film bleau and reminds you it is an Arthouse film.
Then the spoken Parisien is distracting. Since it’s familiar i find my self mentally comparing it to the sub-titles, a distraction i could do without. I would say it is pretty bang on though. The furthest it has slipped this week was Berthauld declaring “C’est Impossibble” and the titles reading “this isn’t happening”.
Lovely to hear “tien” from Tin Tint to Berthauld, when he takes her Dictaphone in the blue lit dungeon place she appears to be in on finding about the sister’s death. Whenever Les Flics go out, they seem to end up in some dungeon place don’t they?
In fact whenever things go a bit downhill for Berthauld, cue the blue light..
Also Roban& the devilishly dashing Pierre (well in his Barrister gear) gets the film bleau treatment. plus the funeral scene, bathed in blue,-how usually surreal is everything surrounding Roban? It did seem an oddly cheerful affair i felt, the funeral.
My immediate thought on hearing that Maman had died was that the brother had killed her a’ la the old pillow trick. The brother just looks shady, i think he’s ‘good ‘ for it. He is decidedly crumpled and crestfallen but i think all that is just his ‘poor me, don’t tell on me’ demeanour for his Bro, Roban. Luckily Roban is on to him..
Nb. Who was the mysterious and beautiful lady that Berthaud meets in the corridor meets and does yet another deal (amongst all the other deals in these two episodes) The lady appears later as some kind of Judge or Magistrate?
Part of my brain is delighting in hearing French, another part following the labarynthine plots, another just plain laughing, because Spiral is quite often je propose even a proportionally high amount of the time, hilarious.
The follow the car scene in the streets of Paris was fabulous cinema, almost laugh out loud.. I couldn’t believe they were doing it and taking it so seriously They appeared to have a mini-swat team on call and a mysterious hitherto unseen big beardy man called Nounours, with a sight-scope appeared, as part of the ‘gang’, on call, it was like the FBI.
Except for Nounours was driving the tiniest car.. They were just following Carlsson’s car, from the courts,that was it.
Nounours:”They’re in the cafe’!”
Berthauld actually says “there’s something fishy going on”!
The same for the woefullly inept sting in the bar with the ever increasingly really bad criminal, Roban.
Roban, Roban, what have you done? You have so let me down, you’re not cool anymore..
However Roban i nominate as the funniest of all the career and less official Les Flic criminals in Spiral tonight. His fake burglary scene was pure joy.
Boo nasty Arnaud though, like a purse lipped school prefect, telling on forever school boyish Roban.
What is Arnaud’s problem with Roban anyway? People here say he has a great pad and since even Clint Eastwood can mess around and still be the coolest cowboy in town i may forgive Roban his Chaplinesque goings on.
Poor Roban was like a love sick puppy, pining over the pouting yet steely Amelie..Sticking up for her son, overprotective son or proprietorial? Hmmm,don’t tell me not another one..
Tonight it was blackmail night, everybody was threatening somebody. Well if Berthauld believes it’s Ronaldo then that’s good enough for me, for now. I was on Ronaldo’s side until he went all evil eyed and grabbed Carlsson’s hand in the prison.
Ronaldo ‘switched’ for sure. He did the stary serial killer or at the very least psychotic stare intermittently thereafter. He seemed to reserve the death ray glare especially for Berthauld, preferably whilst just turning a corner and glancing backwards, malevolently over his shoulder, red carpet style..
Whether he is the killer i am not 100% sure, it does seem likely that the third murder was done by a different person, the carefulness of the procedures err, the methodical nature of treatment of the other girls and the lack of wrapping and the important knots were all missing. However there is the scalpel burn..
i award myself cinqante pointes for spotting the Salvador Dali.
Sweet how they translated it as “a reproduction of Salvador Dali” as it was fairly obvious it wasn’t the original painting and was a scrap taped up on the much questioned “wood” wardrobe.
Good point from somebody about the furniture restoration workshop. It would seem to be a possible link.
What’s going on with the previously buttoned up and ironed and perenially tut tutting Tin Tin? Suddenly his shirt is perilously unbuttoned, not just one button, but two!
Tin Tin is now medallion man, without medallion. Plus he has proper groovy chest hair. In fact there a proliferation of manly chest hair about, not like i was looking or anything..As befitting the man Gang to which Berthauld, their leader, belongs..

i’m going with my initial body language assessment of the ‘vibes’ Vs. Berthauld and Gilou which is that i could swear she fancies the proverbial pants off him. Where. woe is Berthauld, he be a bit of a Nethanderthal and has not a clue how she feels i propose? Is he married or with someone, i don’t know?
Gilou being more than gorgeous in a Gerard Depardieu hunky way..in fact most of the male cast is a seriously scenic sea of handsomeness. Almost like the cast of multiple perfume ads escaped from on set and went off for a beer and to put their old comfy T-shirts on!
Yes, it was truly awful the way they treated Ronaldo. Especially as all Police drama watchers know, it’s far too early for him to be the ‘one’ Well it did only just start.
However any outrage at this was more than somewhat tempered by my amusement at his name! Also, the hospital scene where Gilou & Berthauld turn up drunk. Unintentionally or not-i found it hilarious!
Ok, it was dark, however i still found it funny. I wonder if humour is it’s counterpoint to the ongoing horror? Even in the so called civilised law courts there is still dark dealings going on.
Must say my early liking of Lee Van Clint look-alike Roban is growing. Perhaps will forgive his seemingly prurient interest in the Video. Maybe he really was checking the under-age girl’s consent?
Roban does seem extremely serious about his job, as they all do..not withstanding drinking warm beer in the office-shock horror! I missed the opening the beer with his gun but Neathandral Gilou, i rest my case.. Have seen men open beer caps with their teeth, equally as daft and/or butch?
So in spite of his questionable behaviour over the video, Judge Roban did seem to me, like an Avenging Angel figure right from the start. The whole set up with his slightly sinister secretary is surely the ante-chamber to purgatory.?
Seemingly harsh with the grieving parents he is really hell bent on taking the whole dirty system behind their son’s death death down.
BTW best thing about Roban so far for me is how he gets each and every one he does ‘business’ with to sign something? What is that about?!
It’s never explained what these papers requiring signing are about. Unusually, it seems, there is a ‘paper’ for every one of Judge Roban’s encounters in his office! Few people asked even read the thing through before signing! The obviously psychopathic Mayor did.
Also like how the story of the dog in Judge Roban’s manslaughter is threaded through with the mention of a dog in Berthauld’s case.
Great cliche’ gap there by the way as in what other Police Drama, after having a shot would the Detective say “leave the bottle”. Well the occasional hard-boiled world weary man detective does, once in a blue moon…So Berthauld is getting her groove on, finally, even tho she has the wrong man.
nb. does anybody else feel like Ghostbusters might be arriving any minute due to the blue light problem?
The blue light bathing all does give it a lovely film-noir feel.whilst usefully supplying Gothic backdrop horror lighting at the drop of a hat This lighting also works in the Hospital and cell interrogation scenes with Berthauld and Gilou, giving a surreal and sinister air to Ronaldo’s internment.
Did anybody else find it shocking that Ronaldo appeared to be in the Hospital briefly and then walked up the Hospital corridor to a prison? Was the prison in the Hospital? It was confusing and a little rendition like..
Possibly it’s all meant to be a slightly cartoonish dark caricature whilst being ‘hard hitting and ‘gritty too? i’m quite liking the humour inherent in it-i think? i’m hooked, from here on in..

Hi all, like some of you have come to Spiral straight after The Killing. Spiral, unfairly perhaps as it is a different genre really even tho it’s a ‘Cop Procedural’ has a very hard act to follow.
Only dipped into Spiral before, not sure what numbers, briefly and was put off by the goriness although entranced by the overall ‘chic’ of the sets: incredible lamps, ‘retro’ furnishings, the gorgeous buildings of the law offices and of course mostly everybody’s supreme good looks.
The only thing i remember that i enjoyed previously was the stand out line:
“yes, we have the best collection on Phalluses in the world”! quite obviously a one off line, i propose, in the history of cinema and i found, very funny too..:)
That too, was a gory case and i remember clearly that it was the Van Klint look alike white moustachioed one who was at some couple’s darkly lit farmhouse examining aforesaid collection on a their mantle piece!..
The thing i remember liking about it was the presence of older people in it with white hair and still
a) working b) in the thing to start with and c) not being patronised in any way for their age and utilising both their obvious intelligence and wealth of experience
oh and d) not being necessarily ‘quirky’ and or restricted to a back room somewhere..
My first thoughts on watching it last night was “it’s officially fantastic” and i loved the murky monochrome blue/grey light bathing all, evoking, i felt the 60’s or even the 50’s..I should declare perhaps a penchant for spoken French and once, very long time ago, fluency in Parisien French (and very happy memories of living and working there as a young nanny for a while whilst learning it-on the Boulevard St.Germain-can you believe?!)
For me, unlike @Peckham On Rye, French sounds fabulously ‘cool’, i love the sound of it and it doesn’t remind me of exams, thank goodness:) So being that anything they say sounds necessarily brilliant to me, cool, chic AND sexy i am somewhat prejudiced in favour of anything in French to start with!
I do agree with @Zozitufnel wholeheartedly and it’s great to hear somebody else say it as i feel exactly the same way: why does it always have to be the horrible abuse and torture of some young girl (is it me or are the victims getting younger and younger?) then murdered, then shown in horrible graphic detail. Oh and having been tortured and all the rest, held somewhere (usually a hideous/underground/basement/hospital set up even) for days and days?
Enough already i say, i did get to a point one night, having watched, like most of us as what else is there really on the box? umpteen how many dark and dastardly similar scenarios culminating in one episode of Criminal Minds where yet another woman was being tortured, horribly, whilst suspended from some underground cave’s roof in chains with the deranged one of the day shouting ‘B#+*#’! at her i realised that it’s always women and it is indeed some kind of “murder porn” as Zozitufnell quite rightly says.
I thought “this stuff is sick, i’m watching it, i’ve been ‘sold’ somehow into watching it for the ‘psychological interest’ supposedly, but there really isn’t much of that is there? it’s mainly the visuals..(consistently ‘flash backed’ or presented amongst the serious Profiling scenes..)
I decided to stop watching such stuff-BTW it’s never a man, is it? why is that? not that i’m wishing it on any fictional character:)
So i did gave The Killing a try since it hardly had any such full on relentlessly visual horror i still have that “uurrghh” reflex and agree that it’s harder to read subtitles when you’re hiding your eyes!:)
So i agree with @Highfidelity too, i could have done without such graphic scenes of the body too. I found myself wondering if they had really done that to a dead body or was it some really amazing specialised artist mock-up? I had recently read an article about such a guy who provides lifelike mannequins for films and training medical staff so hopefully, yes, a state of the art special effects illusion..
I would agree tho, that there is humour, whether intentional or unintentional in it..the line from the Pathologist as she robot-like intoned the details starting with:
“a very fine circular saw was used” was, darkly funny to me..it was like the trump out of all autopsies!

the involvement of a nightclub, a paedophile etc is a good point but i would propose it to be so common now so becoming a cliche’ & therefore free from blame of copying from another series perhaps?
These same themes having been present in Special Victims Unit from the Law & Order series..also the pathologists could be said to be the same..worryingly, for me, the pathologist in CSI Miami would get all sympathetic &cuddle the bodies, which was a little darker than intended..
